Regional identities: Istrians, Vojvodinians and Northern Irish growing in censuses

Posted on by

Are certain regional identities (for a terminological clarification on this, please refer to what I explain at the bottom of this post*) posed to become the dominant ones within their regions in Europe, pushing national identities into the background? Maybe it is too soon to definitely answer this question, but census results released by the end of 2012 have shown that several regional senses of belonging are indeed cementing themselves as a strong option for the citizens in their territories and that, in some cases, they are starting to challenge the centuries long dominance of national identities there (or are even becoming one of them, as could finally be the case in Northern Ireland).

Perhaps one of the most remarkable data contained in the Northern Ireland 2011 census is the fact that for the first time it has clearly shown that the links “Protestant=British” and “Catholic=Irish” are not accurate. In fact, this is not a very new finding. As Orla Muldoon and others had already explained in 2007,

Self-determination theories

freedom_nobkSelf-determination versus territorial integrity

National self-determination appears to challenge the principle of territorial integrity (or sovereignty) of states as it is the will of the people that makes a state legitimate. This implies a people should be free to choose their own state and its territorial boundaries. However, there are far more self-identified nations than there are existing states and there is no legal process to redraw state boundaries according to the will of these peoples.[42] According to the Helsinki Final Act of 1975, the UN, ICJ and international law experts, there is no contradiction between the principles of self-determination and territorial integrity, with the latter taking precedence. cdcsRegarding the agreement between Dacic and Pasztor

Centre for Development of Civil Society (CDCS) welcomes the approval of Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr. Dacic and President of the Assembly of AP Vojvodina Mr. Pastor that the existing provisions of penal policy concerning inter-ethnic incidents should be reviewed, and that it is necessary to speed up the prosecution of such cases to the judicial authorities.
CDCS also hails reaction of Mr. Dacic who on 16 February 2013 at the meeting with Mr.Pastor agreed that municipalities in Vojvodina where recent ethnic incidents escalated, besides the police, require engagement of the members of Gendarmerie (Special Police Units) if necessary.
CDCS will continue to follow the situation in this area as in previous years.

Regarding the latest ethnic incidents in Temerin and
their relationship with recent attempts to solve the Kosovo problem

New ethnic incidents in Temerin have a special significance in the light of recent solutions for solving the Kosovo problem.
Multi-ethnic clashes in Temerin have persisted for years despite all the efforts of the provincial government bodies, independent agencies and the police. On the night between 26 and 27 January 2013, five men of Hungarian nationality were beaten on two occasions. There are serious indications that these young men were beaten exclusively because of their ethnicity. On 21 October 2012, in Temerin, two young men of Serbian nationality were beaten by seven Hungarian men who wore Nazi insignia.

This continues the long spiral of ethnic violence in Temerin. In August 2011, the forum of later banned Serbian fascist organizations "Obraz" in Backi Jarak in Municipality Temerin, was attended by around 500 young people. After midnight debates they organized a march through the districts of Temerin inhabited by Hungarians.
Hungarian neo-Nazis from Senta and Ada are increasingly organizing rampage in Temerin.
The exodus of Serbs in Kosovo on 17 March 2004 and the declaration of independence of Kosovo on 21 February 2008, led to the spread of the wave of ethnic violence areas of Kosovo and Metohija into Vojvodina.

Strongly conflicting arguments continue over the future of Serbia’s northern province of Vojvodina, with some demanding more autonomy, and some less, or none at all.

A poster war on the theme of the status of the Serbian province of Vojvodina has been launched in the city of Novi Sad.

The Vojvodina Party, which backs the province’s independence, put up blue-green posters, reading “Republic of Vojvodina – for a Free Vojvodina”, across Novi Sad on Monday.

The posters were put up over those reading “Novi Sad – capital of Serbia”, previously put up by the Treca Srbija party, which wants to see Vojvodina’s autonomy abolished.

Tensions over the future of the province, which was part of Austria-Hungary before World War 1 and is more multi-ethnic than Serbia proper, rose in July, after a Constitutional Court ruling curbed Vojvodina’s powers.
